At
11 months old, the polio virus paralyzed me. Unable to run and play with
other children my age, I used clay, crayons, pencils, paint and paper
as my playground. These objects provided me with hours of entertainment
and interesting ways to creatively express myself. A middle school art
teacher recognized my budding talent, and entered my work in a citywide
student art competition, and I won second place. During high school, several
of my 4-H art projects earned Grand Champion in the Franklin County Fair,
and received first place at the Indiana State Fair. As time passed, college,
work, and family gained priority in my life and my solace of sketching
and drawing became fond memories.
In the last few years, post-polio syndrome has forced me to take early
medical retirement. With increasing muscle weakness from the late effects
of polio, I am rediscovering my solace in art.
I am expanding my love of color, form and texture in my latest choice
of canvas – gourds. Nature sculpts gourds into an endless variety
of shapes; each with its own unique character, evoking a feeling of ancient
and modern art forms. I find gourd objects, historical and contemporary,
fascinating. My design interpretations use natural elements and earth
tones, as well as bold color combinations.
I
create one-of-a-kind, distinctive art by combining traditional mediums
in nontraditional ways. I utilize techniques such as pyroengraving, carving,
and leather dyes to enhance the nature beauty of the gourds. Adding pine
needles, teneriffe weaving, horsehair, feathers and beads further enhances
visual and textural effects. The results are beautiful utilitarian art
for use in the home as well as unique one-of-a-kind decorative art pieces.
